I remember William always being so welcoming and making me feel like part of the family. One thing that really impressed me about William was his ability to peel an orange completely without breaking the skin.
For a number of years I was part of the traditional Sunday roasts and always looked forward to the sense of family around the table, the food was always good too!

I remember always being made welcome in the family home and William (Mr Torr) always asking how I was. Even though over the years there has not been the same contact as there once was, the open and welcoming person he was, is still to this day and in the future something I will continue to carry with me.

Dear William, it is with a heavy heart that i am writing this to you, i was shocked to read in the ODT of your passing, the last time you came & we chatted only the other month, i didnt know that would be the last time i would see you.
I first meet William about early mid 90's when i was Running NZ Rent a Car, this Man came to my Office dressed well with a brief case/ or a case, he asked me if i had time, as he wanted to interview me??
I was busy, and didn't really have time, but i was curious to know what the Interview was going to be about.... William proceeded to Ask what my criteria was for employing people, what did i look for?
We chatted about my standard and expectations, we agreed & both held the same values about life, we chatted for hours.... and then i asked William, "Why do you need a job" ? He said "Yes... if i had just walked in and asked were there any vacancies,,,, you would have said No, because i am to old & not what is on trend"
I was so taken by his angle of stopping me in my tracks & allowing me to listen, we understood one and other, and i employed him on the spot!!
William worked on my weekend shift Fri Friday, till Sunday evening, he was the most reliable and conscientious man, obliging & very handy, he could put his hand to anything & fix it. We became Friends and i would visit at his home and too became friends of Mavis, William showed me is love for craft, he made such beautiful gift cards & was so talented with his woodwork.
It has been nearly a 30 year friendship you lit up a room when you walked in and each time you visited me at work, we were always the loudest and we were always in hysterical laughter, we got one & other, i loved you and your dry sense of humor.
I returned today from my weekends leave to a stream of e-mails & one titled :
Sorry i'm here right now ( but please, come to my funeral)
A heartfelt message from your family explaining of your passing, and then a phone call from Mavis. We chatted William & i told Mavis just how much to mean to me and how precious our conversations meant, and the depth we shared, our click, i will always fondly remember & treasure. I will not be able to attend your service tomorrow, but will watch online,
My condolences to Mavis Phil Richard & Family
With Love & the deepest of respect, my dear friend William X
