Richard Hoani: Mbe, Major 481297, The Black Watch Parata

E toku hoa Richard, Haere, haere, haere. I was so sorry to hear of Richard's death. My father, a friend of Brig. Hoani, was so pleased and proud when Richard joined the Black Watch. I remember him visiting us in Scotland, when I was a teenager. He played a memorable and enjoyable part in linking Scotland and New Zealand when I persuaded him (very easily) to let an all-party group from the Scottish Parliament, led by my cousin Alex, visit Puketeraki Marae in about 2009. He joined us the night before to meet the delegation: a lively night. I remember his friendship, his proud Black Watch connection, his work for Ngai Tahu. And many condolences to Amy and the whanau. Kua hinga te tōtara - me te Scots pine - o te waonui a Tāne. Haere, Haere.

I completely endorse Hugh Rose's comments about Dick's standing in The Black Watch, and indeed in the wider Army. He was a genuinely professional soldier much respected and liked by all those he served with. As a platoon and later a company commander he showed all the characteristics of a great leader: his men followed him with great loyalty and confidence. And as a person Dick was a good and trusted friend. For those of us who live in Scotland it was a sad, if inevitable, day when he returned to his New Zealand homeland. He will not be forgotten in The Black Watch.

My sincere sympathy and condolences Amy...and Parata family. Richard was a close friend from College days in Nelson. Our meetings in more recent times in Waikouaiti-Karitane make for special, happy memories. His was a remarkable life. Best wishes, Don Huse

Dick Parata was a well-remembered and much respected member of The Black Watch Regimental family. The sad news of his death is now circulating around his colleagues and contemporaries and I am sure many will join me in paying tribute to our dear friend and a true gentleman. Hugh Rose

Hi Amy , Our deepest condolences go out to you on the passing of Richard . It is very hard loosing a Dad but memories are a great thing . Unfortunately Sheryl and myself have prior arrangements out of town on Monday so will not be able to attend Richards funeral . Kind regards Mike & Sheryl Chittock .
