Dearest Aunty Maria For many of us 1960s and 1970s Dunedin-borns & Dunedin-raised Pāsefika Ones, heaps of fond memories have arisen since You passed-on. In no particular order, here are some [a] Your loud, joyous laugh [b] Your care, pride and attention to detail in Your service as a JP [c] The so very EXCELLENT hospitality and care You & Uncle Graeme offered us, our children whenever our PACIFICA Dunedin Branch met at your “Pine Heights” fale ….so much laughter and joy, with the ongoing joking banter and teasing between Uncle Graeme and Maanea (1965 - 2021) [d] Your care to make sure the lolly jar was full for Maanea (the diabetic) who was the wee flower girl at Your wedding [e]At various fundraising “socials” of the 1980s: seeing You dressed up in your fur coat (depending of course on the weather), so ELEGANT in your earrings, nails and heels – GLAMOUR personified [f] Your loud and joyous laugh [g] Attending Your retirement function (from AMC) and speaking there, saying that You’d be busier than ever – and You were [h] Your joy and pride in and positive, unflagging support for both Your boys and grandchildren and their achievements [i] same goes for all the Nieces and Nephews [j] Loving having you as our siva Sāmoa teacher because you didn’t hit or tell at us as others might have ~ You would just stop us and have us start all over again

Our sincere condolences to Graham, Shaun, and Brendan. I first met Maria when the street was new and the children were pre schoolers. Over the years since we enjoyed many a chat over the front fence as I walked past. We will miss you even though we no longer live nearby. Rob and Pat Turner

Talofa Lava to Maria's family. As the newly appointed Director of Anglican Methodist Family Care Centre in 2003, I found myself to be Maria's 'boss'. It became clear very quickly who was the 'boss'. Maria had a clear and determined vision of her role in supporting her people, being called upon at all hours to assist with advocacy, translation and support. There was never a moment to question her vision, nor did I ever try. She worked all hours way beyond her paid position in the agency, and offered personal support and guidance to me and our staff. Graeme was the patient driver who waited outside for the meetings to finish. Thank you to Maria and her family. Nicola Taylor.

My deepest condolences Graeme, Shaun, Brendon, Mineva & Ti'i. Losing a loved one is a void that can never be filled again. But, their existence remain in out hearts in every turn. Their characteristics and the sound of their voice and their beauty of their smile remains in our minds and in our hearts. That's what Maria will be. Her laughter and contagious happiness was her happy disease she carried with her everywhere. She surely will be sorely missed by everyone. Graeme my friend and brother, thank you for being such a great husband to our dear friend & sister. You both were so great and so right for each other because you shared the same joy and hospitality. Thank you for being the admirable easy go lucky man that you are. Shaun & Brendon, you've been blessed to have such a mother as your Mama. She has given you the best and be blessed by her blessings poured on you. Neva & Ti'i, you couldn't have been blessed by a more loving and blessed mother as Maria. She has left so much for you all to be grateful for and to continue walking with. May her final moments with you be all but love and joyful memories of her life. Alofa tele and God bless us all.

You were the most amazing godmother one could ask for Maria. You could make anyone smile and feel loved and light up the room with your laughter. I even treasure the good amount of tsks and over extended name calling that Brendan and I elicited. Rest in peace Maria 💞

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot. To our dear Uncle Graeme, Shaun, Brendan, sis Neva, Uncles Nicky & Avito and all our aiga, thinking of you all at this very difficult time, so sorry we can't be with you in Dunedin as we are just on our way back home to Australia from Canada and the US. So sorry to hear this sad message about Fa'ava Maria, you were such a beautiful soul inside and out, you were so much fun. Memories of our Samoan Community will live on forever, there was so much fun and laughter. Now rest in peace and love Maria, our thoughts and prayers are with you, Graeme and your extended family. To Graeme and the Boys- A heartfelt farewell to Maria- who touched so many lives on her life journey. Maria and her big smile, her big heart, and her wonderful Graeme- what a combination! Memories of Maria, when she worked with us at Early Childhood Development Unit. So much fun, so much laughter, and making things happen! At that time, a big focus was to have in place early childhood services for our Pacific communities. And with Maria's involvement, Otago had the highest participation % across the whole country! Maria's contribution to that success. Just one wee challenge for us- Maria did not have driver licence! Maria getting her drivers licence..a no go zone! However Maria set up her own ways to get to places! and thank you Graeme for filling the gaps! Rest in Peace - you will remain close in so many peoples hearts. Kathryn Palmer
