So sorry to learn of Mac’s death. Our paths crossed on many fronts in the good old Dunedin days. From his pioneering role in Eel farming, through the Karitane Crayfish era, the informal meetings, the parties and so many good times. Always an enthusiastic participant but always very considerate of others. We are thinking of you and the family Pat, and also hoping that the storm today does not impede Mac’s service at Waikouaiti. Legend of a man, legend of the sea RIP Mac

Uncle Mac you were such a kind, gentle clever man with a great use of wit. I recall you humouring Nana on many occasions. I have been proud to have you as my Uncle. Love Jan, Dan and Mason

There are few humans I have known with the grace, stature, passion, wisdom and innovative thinking of the one and only Mac Chaplin. The inspired leadership at SBHS as Head Prefect, the pleasure in surfing at Mitchells Bay with both Pat and Mac in freezing Southland water mid winter, the delight of their wedding day in ChCh are perfect reminders of a very special and cherished man. To the family my heartfelt thoughts are with you at this time and I know that you all know what a special person Mac was. Pat ---I do trust that you get through the turmoil and shock of events but please be comforted with the thought that I had massive admiration for Mac and he stands as an icon to me personally for his humility, engaging nature, innovative thought and reasoned, disciplined thinking. I cannot think of another close friend who I so deeply admired and respected and I am at a loss to write the words that truely reflect my personal sense of loss of a very dear friend. I will call next week to talk but in the interim I want you to know my heart is torn and you will be in my thoughts until we speak. Love to all the family. Bryan Travers
