SIMPSON, James (Jim) Emeritus Prof. BSc,PhD FNZIC, FRSC
It is with great sadness that the family of James Simpson announce his passing, on November 23, 2024, aged 82 years.
James was a partner, a parent, a support, and a mentor to Jane, Flora, Richard, Paul, Elisabeth, and Simon. He was a support and mentor to them and a great number of others, especially in his role as a member of the Chemistry & Botany Departments at the University of Otago for over 50 years.
May he rest in peace.
-- A service for James will be held in Hope and Sons Chapel, 523 Andersons Bay Road, Dunedin at 11.00am on Friday November 29th. Jim was a valued member of Club Enliven for a number of months before his health deteriorated. Jim fitted into the club routine easily, and was well liked by everyone. He entertained us all and made everyone laugh by his version of many old time songs. Also his knowledge of nursery rhymes was outstanding telling us that he used to recite them with his daughter Flora. We miss you Jim.
Dear Jane and Family, I am so saddened to hear of Jame's death. Although I didn't know James myself, having shared time with you recently, I'm aware of the tough journey you have been going through. Much love and condolences from both Tim and me. Rose.
Dear Jane and family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Jim was a highly valued colleague and a tremendous support for the Department of Botany at the University of Otago. He gave his time selflessly and with great humanity during his time as Head of Department and in the years following. He gave support, advice and wise insights to our staff and students. He also gave tremendous support to me personally for which I will forever be grateful. His generosity of spirit, wise counsel and experience gathered over many years were both highly valued and a source of reassurance. Jim was a colleague, friend, mentor to many, generous and hard-working. He is, and will be, deeply missed. Thank you Jim for everything.
Dear Jane and whānau I was deeply saddened to hear of Jim’s passing, and my heart goes out to you during this incredibly difficult time. Jim supported me during my time in Chemistry and later in Botany, offering encouragement and wisdom. I will always be grateful for his kindness, generosity, and belief in me. I will forever treasure the memories of our regular catch-ups at Eureka, and the time's Jack and I visited Taieri Mouth. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. Kath
