I remember teaching and flatting with Gordon In Te Anau in 1967-68. He introduced me to tramping and the Hollyford Valley. He loved his 1950 RM Riley car. A great Chap.

Dear Catherine and family. My name is David Edward FrontinI and met Gordon back in September, 2019 when he was living in Townsville, Queensland, Australia and we regularly saw each other until December, 20q9 when he went back to New Zealand. I only discovered Gordon's passing when I did a Google search late Sunday night. I initially thought that I might have been in trouble with Gordon as he didn't respond back to me. I was calling and texting on a daily basis. It should have occurred to me that Gordon might have passed away. I am truly sorry and I shall always remember Gordon Douglas with extreme kindness and compassion and love. Kindest Regards, David Edward FrontinI ❤️ XOXO 😇.

A sad hello to you Candy. So upsetting to learn of Gordon’s untimely loss. Whilst Gary knew Gordon much better from Portobello School days, the few times we met up were always cheerful and convivial. I always understood what amazing good fortune it would be for a foster child to be placed in yours and Gordon’s trusty care. All the good things would be part of the mix - fun, food, adventure, exercise, education, love and kindness. I can only hope Candy, that now that it’s your turn for being cared for that you get absolutely tons of it. Sincere sympathy, Isla

Mr D. Kev Neil called me when we heard the news, we could both recall a bunch of stuff that you taught us. I remember you having the class captivated with Tutankhamen and Charles Lindberg. You were a great teacher for rough and tumble boys! Got us interested and knew how to keep us in line! RIP

Mr D was my teacher at Portobello School in the early 1980s. I remember a bushy beard and booming voice, a love of music and poetry, shipwrecks and sea shanties. I think I first wrote poetry in his class, which I’ve continued my whole life. Gordon became a great friend to my Dad and together they adventured by kayak. Gordon was a rare and precious person —eccentric and literary, knowledgeable and curious, welcoming and generous. He didn’t seem to care much for material wealth—an example for us all. I’m so sorry for the great and sudden loss to Gordon’s family. I hope his memory is a comfort.

Tribute to Gordon Gordon was a man of many talents, he was a family man, a teacher, an adventurer and much, much more. But to me he was the most aspirational person I have met. He aspired to do many things, he always had a list he would review with us each time we met. He was a dreamer who lived his dreams! Gordon ticked off his list and added to it just as fast. He knew life was for living, it was not a dress rehearsal and he was determined to live it to the full. He could not have done it without his lifelong partner and soulmate, Candy. Together, team Douglas, would spring into action and make the aspirations happen near and far. Most of these adventures were not easy and challenging them both physically and emotionally, so not always the easy road was taken. For the most part helping others was the common theme, but personal challenge was also in the mix. My message to you, at this sad time, is to take inspiration from the way Gordon lived his life. Embrace your family, reach out to others, challenge yourself and live your dreams. Make every day count because Gordon had plans for many more days. Rest in peace dear friend.

I was lucky enough to not only have Mr. D as a teacher but to be friends with his daughter Kiri and spend time with their family. He made us love poetry and literature in school, and he and Candy always had a welcoming home on the hill with the dogs, horses, boats, any other thing we could find to do. He made such an impact on so many lives and will be greatly missed. Sending my love to the Douglas family.

I was in Mr D's first teaching class at Balfour School in 1966. I remember it as being a good year and he used to call in and see members of that class over the years. We still call it the Year of 66!. I have good memories of him. Deepest sympathy to all his family.

It was a great shock to read about Gordon's sudden death. I have lost a good friend and a great wilderness companion. My condolences go out to Candy and the Douglas family. Gordon will be much missed. You get to know someone well after seven hours kayaking Lake Hauroko. I admire Gordon and Candy's involvement with their foster-children - their generosity and willingness to support and care for them. Thank you for including me on so many of your expeditions. I will miss our Friday get-togethers for beer and chips at Salt, my friend.

Ever since I have known Gordon he has cared , supported and been interested in people. I have witnessed Gordon getting involved in practical ways helping and advocating particularly for young people. Doing what he could to give them meaning and purpose in life. With the love and support of Candy he made a difference. He will be missed by many.

Mr Douglas, like mine, many hearts are breaking as they hear of your passing. I will forever be greatful to you and Candy for accepting me and most the community kids into your lives, for including me in your adventures. My most treasured childhood memories included the Douglas family. From the carol singing to the horse trecks and all the goodness in between I thank you! Thank you for being part of my lifes journey. Rest easy good man 🕊
