Gerard Anthony (Tony) Hanning

Genny and family I worked with Tony over many years producing The Tablet. I can say with all honesty that Tony was the most remarkable true gentleman I have ever met. I had so much respect for his talent with words, photos and cartoons (that he drew himself), and the ability he had to organize all those components into stories that fitted perfectly into every space allocated in the magazine. I very rarely had to change a thing after he had proofed the copy, which was due to his perfection in writing and creating interesting stories with perfect English. I have missed working with him on The Tablet and the interesting conversations we had, but mostly he talked of his family and what Genny, his children and grandies were up to. Such a humble, intelligent, caring man, dedicated to his family and all the projects and people he was involved with throughout his life. Time to rest Tony

Tony was a wonderful person, helping so many people in many ways My deepest sympathy to all his family.

I was very sad to read of the passing of Tony - such a special person who walked his faith daily. I have known Tony for many years due to his longstanding involvement and the display of his fantastic skills with the Bishop's Shield Public Speaking competition. Tony will be remembered so fondly by thousands of students from the Otago/Southland Diocese for all his amazing work. I always enjoyed my many conversations I had with Tony - his calm tone and genuine interest made me always feel I had his total attention. You are all very much in my thoughts and prayers and I know Tony will be resting in peace in the arms of the Almighty Father. God bless you all.

It was with sadness that we learned of the death of Tony while we were away on holiday. We both had a long association with Tony and in particular there was major work that we cooperated in with the establishment of Kavanagh College ( Now Trinity Catholic College ) and the early days of St Bernadette's school post Tomorrows Schools. There were many hours involved in the Kavanagh College development and despite the challenges we were successful in the provision of a leading Secondary School for Dunedin. Tony was a gentleman with integrity and Catholic values and he achieved for the diocese of Dunedin and throughout the province of Otago. His expertise was invaluable and his legacy is unsurpassed. To Genny and Family, It was with great sadness, reading of Tony's passing. My Heartfelt Sympathy Genny and Family! Tony was an exceptional gentleman. Very caring and a wonderful communicator, speaker and professional and with a great sense of humor. Working with Tony on the Mary Cotter heritage panel in Arrowtown was a wonderful experience for me. Reading Tony's wonderful book on Mary Cotter, means new generations and families delight in Tony's work and his dedication to his family's great legacy. Seeing a young family at Tony's (Mary Cotter) panel on Friday the 19th of December Arrowtown, read and take a photo of their daughter at the Mary Cotter Tree, says a lot about Tony's great legacy and kindness! This being just one of Tony's projects of kindness. Tony's spirit and presence very much lives on for all of us!

Genny and family, Tony’s contribution to the Lions(LCI), the Church and education has been outstanding and only surpassed by his devotion to you and the extended family. Our world would be a much better place if more of us followed his contribution. Rest in Peace Tony. A life well lived.

My condolences to all of Tony's family following the news of his passing. I have fond memories of the many meetings I had with Tony and Bill, to discuss the Southland school integration agreements and work through the planned property items within them. Tony was a pleasure to work with. RIP

Genny and family I was shocked and greatly saddened to read of Tony’s passing. He was a lovely man and one of the generation of true gentlemen. He and you Genny have done so much for others and the community. Tony will be sorely missed. I attended Mass in Whakatane last night and I prayed for you all. My thoughts are very much with you. We have just found out about the passing Tony. To Genny and the family, we send heartfelt condolences on the loss of a wonderful man. We were fortunate to have known Tony and Genny for many years through Lions both within NZ and also in Australia. His pleasant and easy-going manner will be sorely missed.

To the immediate and extended family we offer our sincere condolences at this time, I knew Tony as a PID and attended a Leadership Weekend with him as a Presenter, his professional manner and his communication skills I will always remember, he is a loss to NZ but his respect from all he met and served with will not be forgotten.
