Eleanor Joyce Doig

My memories of Eleanor go back to 1965, sharing the Prefects' Room at KVHS. In 1966, I went to Samoa with VSA, and Eleanor followed me, being sent to the same school (Falealili Junior HIgh School) with VSA in 1967. Our paths crossed again many years later, through our shared work with Presbyterian Support (Otago) and her wonderful leadership of the innovative Community First project. She became my student when doing her Diploma in Health Sciences about 20 years ago, and I know how much her continuing work in South Dunedin has fully shown her lifetime of service, action, empathy and fun to all who met her. Eleanor was such a huge part of the fabric of South Dunedin. It was a joy to know her and to be included in her life for a short time. I loved working with her, hearing her stories and sharing in her enormous passion and sense of fun. What a woman!

She was lovely. Was sad to hear of her passing. Used to clean her house. Also did home help for her Dad.

Eleanor was a "tour de force" and lives on through the many causes and projects she championed, the community groups she supported and the individuals she mentored over so many years. Service and sacrifice, love and compassion are words that immediately spring to mind when speaking about Eleanor....and dogged determination! I was privileged to work alongside her in Otepoti, I learned a great deal. I am thankful to have seen her in action, and to be able to call her a most valued colleague. Rest well Eleanor, you have earned it! Our community champion to the end

Dearest Eleanor, I was deeply saddened to hear you’d ’popped your clogs’. I always valued our conversation whenever we crossed paths and I greatly admired the mahi you have done for the South Dunedin community. My deepest sympathies to Anna and to the Family.

I have so much love and respect for Eleanor. As a Riselaw Road kid, who grew into an adult that worked with Eleanor following the Sth D floods - community was at the absolute heart of her mahi and we are all better for it. Arohanui Eleanor.

Dear Anna and Eleanor's family, I am very sad to hear the news of Eleanor's death. I know it was expected but that in no way lessens the impact of her loss. I know that you will miss her deeply. Eleanor influenced the lives of so many people, with her work and advocacy on behalf of others. I greatly admired her passion and her steadfast determination to bring about positive changes. I well remember Eleanor and her Mother who lived on Elgin Road at the time. They were both heavily involved in the Girl Guide movement in the 1960's. Eleanor was my first patrol leader. I remember her as a leader, a wise and kind person with a great sense of humour. She took us on our first guide camps at Waikouaiti and she taught me how to make damper and light a fire! I also went on a camp with her to Peel Forest, Geraldine. I have such fond memories of her from all those years ago. A truly wonderful person. My sincere condolences to all her family. Glenys Wilson

To Eleanor’s Family Sending you so much love at this time. Eleanor was one of life’s beautiful rays of sunshine and she shared those rays with this world and all who needed it. I remember her popping in to our house when I was a teenager she was always so bright and uplifting a few minutes chatting with her would just brighten your day and it meant so much that she gave you that time.
