Loved partner and friend of Ruth Ross. Beloved father and father in law of Alexander and Caitlin (Massachusetts), Stuart and Sonia (Canberra), Eleanor* and Darren (Melbourne), and Mai (Netherlands), loved step-father of Nicky and Craig, and Megan. Adored grandfather of Charlotte, Lachlan, Philippa, Annabel, Thomas, Amelia, Angus, Hannah, Lennon, Nima, and Jari, Elden, Josh, Matt, and Kate.

Dear Ruth, during my years as an anaesthetist working with Paul he was the most amazing teacher, turning into a trusted mentor as the years went by. He was kind and caring, hugely knowledgeable and always happy to give support when needed. I got to know him as one of the most widely read and broadly educated human beings I’ve come across. So sad that his career was cut short by his illness. May he rest in peace and may you be well. Ulla, Dunedin

It was a pleasure and a privilege to care for Paul during his time at Oxford Court. He was always such a kind and thoughtful man, both to staff and the other residents. I will truly miss seeing him and looking after him. My heartfelt condolences to Ruth and the rest of the family.
As an anaesthetic colleague of Paul, I have known him since he joined the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in 1997. He was well regarded as an excellent clinician , devoted to his specialty not only in anaesthesia but also in the care of patients in the pain clinic in which he participated. Although I lost touch with Paul to some extent following my retirement in the early 2000s, I was aware that in spite of some disability following cranial surgery for a brain tumour, he continued to apply himself to his work. Subsequently I caught up with him a number of occasions following his retirement, and more recently during his period of care in Oxford Court. I was saddened to see how his illness had ravaged him following such a dedicated life of caring for others. My thoughts are with you Ruth and family at this sad time, Jim Clayton.
